Emergency Information Officer

Serve as the county’s emergency information officer. Part of the core change team for the creation of the new Department of Public Safety Communications. Created the county’s PIO Corps. Train staff and lead agency emergency exercises; participate on the county’s emergency exercise planning team. Write news releases, manage Web content, handle photography for consulting agencies and countywide projects, and produce audio and video programs and other marketing/communication materials. Produce six monthly newsletters -- responsible for all content, layout, design and photography. Communications consultant to the Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management, McConnell Public Safety and Transportation Operations Center and the Department of Public Safety Communications. Write and narrate bi-weekly "Health and Safety" and "News to Use" podcasts, as well as voice the "Board of Supervisors Meeting Highlights" podcast. Voiceover demos

Assisted customers in the purchase of used vehicles and the sale of their current vehicle(s), guiding them through vehicle needs and selection, test drives, financing and purchase/sell. Provided sales guidance and used customer service skills to successfully rank consistently in the top 15 sales consultants on CarMax’s “Voice of the Customer” monthly surveys. Received a “Performance Recognition” award in August 2012 for connecting with the customer and work ethic. 

Chief, Communications Division

Manage day-to-day operations of communications division of the Office of Public Affairs, including production and distribution of daily news releases, a daily internal e-mail newsletter to the county’s workforce of over 11,000, and production of a bi-weekly printed internal newsletter. Also responsible for managing the Fairfax County Government Communicators group, scheduling monthly meetings and annual seminars, and producing a weekly e-mail newsletter for the group. Coordinate Web content for the Office of Public Affairs’ pages on both the county Web site and the internal Intranet site. Media and public relations for county government and serve as communications/pr consultant for designated agencies.

Director of Public Information

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of public information/media relations office for Campbell University, the second largest private university in the state, including supervising three full-time professionals and five part-time student staff. Office produced over 6,000 news releases during the last fiscal year, five issues of the alumni tabloid publication and the President’s Honor Roll of Donor/ Annual Report. Coordinate advertising for the University, marketing, Web site and public relations. Assisted with Advancement and Alumni projects and special events.

Marketing Specialist
(10/97 - 10/99) City of Raleigh, Transit Division, Raleigh, NC
Responsible for increasing ridership and revenue for Capital Area Transit (cat) and increasing awareness of the City of Raleigh’s public transit system. Increased information center locations from 8 to over 40, established 15 external ticket sales outlets, created a customer newsletter, created a transit division website, administered the exterior bus advertising program, developed two new ticket programs, wrote press releases and handled media relations, and was responsible for all marketing and promotional efforts and desktop publishing. Also organized a series of statewide meetings for transit marketing professionals from across North Carolina.

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of this 10,000 square foot, forty-plus dealer antique mall, including customer service, inventory and fiscal control, and dealer relations. Assisted the mall owner with marketing, promotion, desktop publishing, media relations, and advertising.

Director of Communications
(10/88 - 12/94), Autism Society of North Carolina, Raleigh, NC
Responsible for entire communications efforts for the Autism Society of North Carolina, a statewide nonprofit organization. Increased newsletter from quarterly to six issues per year. Created a Media Minute newsletter to statewide media. Wrote, edited and designed all Society brochures, pamphlets, specialty publications, workshop and conference programs, information and referral materials, and other printed items. Photographer for the Society; responsible for annual summer camp photo documentary of 6-8 weeks of camp. Created the Society bookstore and merchandising efforts and led from infancy to over $150,000 yearly sales. Responsible for news releases and media relations.

(part-time, 1992-1995), Campbell University, Buies Creek, NC
Taught 1-2 courses per semester at Campbell University, "Introduction to Radio Production," and "Advanced Radio Production: Sports Broadcasting," both 300 level courses in the Mass Communications program. Designed both courses and wrote the syllabus for both classes.

Wrote all local sports stories for this weekly, Pulitzer Prize winning paper, including game and feature stories, interviews, and statistics. Did page composition, layout and some photography.

General Manager
(5/82 - 5/85), WCCE Radio, Campbell University, Buies Creek, NC
Responsible for all aspects of this news/talk station: fundraising, promotions, programming, staffing, training, and budgeting. Taught within the university’s communications department and assisted with the internship program. Created and edited a monthly listener’s guide and produced various weekly sports talk shows, including the syndicated "Campbell University Sports Show." Play-by-play announcer for university sports. Promoted from assistant manager/sports director.
